What is the UNF number that I see at the end of some dataset citations?

Modified on Tue, 30 Sep at 11:43 AM

In the Data Stations, datasets which contain tabular data files have a Universal Numeric Fingerprint (UNF) included in the dataset citation, for example:

Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek - CBS, 2009, "Survey integratie nieuwe groepen - SING 2009", https://doi.org/10.17026/DANS-XNN-KY48, DANS Data Station Social Sciences and Humanities, V1, UNF:6:UZs/rmUdlWKe/kifQ+BjjA== [fileUNF]

A UNF is a cryptographic hash or signature that can be used to uniquely identify a versioned dataset. The Dataverse software that the Data Stations use creates such a UNF for datasets with tabular data files that are converted to .tab files (see ‘Why do I see .tab files in my dataset?’) and automatically adds them to the citation. More information about UNFs can be found here
