How is the software policy regulated?

Security updates of the OS are installed automatically and this also concerns the used software components such as the web and application server. Production systems have activated a security layer.

The Dataverse software was initially developed by the Institute for Quantitative Social Science (IQSS), Harvard University. It is Open Source software that is continues to be developed and is publicly available in GitHub. Harvard University is the administrator of the Dataverse source code.

The application code used by DANS is a copy of the Harvard Dataverse source code.

DANS also develops adjustments to the code, which are submitted to Harvard by means of a Pull Request/change proposal. If the proposal is assessed positively, it becomes part of the application software.

Open Source software uses software libraries that are checked for vulnerabilities by the GitHub community. The Dataverse software is used by 125 institutions worldwide. The Dataverse community keeps each other informed if security issues are found.
