How can I make use of files with restricted access?

Modified on Tue, 22 Oct at 5:18 PM

If a dataset contains one or more files for which access is restricted, it is sometimes possible to submit an access request. On the ‘Terms’ tab of the dataset you can find out if the files are available upon request and on which terms. If the access request is enabled, you can follow these steps:

1.    Make sure you are logged in at the Data Station [See question ‘How can I log into a DANS Data Station?’];

2.    Go to the ‘File’ tab of the dataset and select the file for which you would like to request access;

3.    Click the ‘Access file’ button and choose ‘Request Access’.

4.    If you would like to submit an access request for multiple files at once, you can select these files with the checkbox. After selecting your files, click the ‘Access Request’ button on top of the file table.

5.    Accept terms and conditions if present.

6.    The request will be sent to the data owner. (This can be someone other than the person mentioned as the ‘Point of Contact’.)

7.    If the data owner has granted access (you will receive an email notification.

8.    If access was granted (or denied) access, you will be able to download the file(s) from the Data Station. You will need to be logged in with your account.
